It isn't hard to choose a good charity.
GiveWell evaluates and ranks charities by their effectiveness. It is by far the best charity evaluator known to us. Started by a group of friends who left jobs in the financial industry, GiveWell obtains and reviews detailed financial and operational data from the charities it evaluates, then applies its methodology to rank those charities according to their effectiveness. The result is GiveWell's list of Top Charities, which it has updated regularly for over a decade.
If you'd like to do a deep dive into GiveWell's selections or methodology, you can. The organization publishes the reasoning behind its choices, its areas of confidence, its areas of uncertainty, its assumptions, and its sources of information. The Boston Globe called GiveWell "[t]he gold standard for giving."
Don't send money to us.
We don't accept donations. We encourage thoughtful giving to charitable organizations that have proven themselves capable of maximizing the positive human impact of each donated dollar, such as those ranked highly by GiveWell.
